With Mobile SEO factors that matters I have created a technical almost perfect website regarding mobile SEO.

This website doesn't rank in Google at this moment because it is brand new.

In this blog, I track the position of 'Mobile SEO factors that matters' in Google search results over time when you search for 'Mobile SEO'.

So I'd say ... Stay tuned.

2021 March 29. Updated the web page. The fieldset / legend structure used before is replaced by a classical header / paragraph structure.

2021 March 29. "Mobile SEO factors that matters" is not found at the first ten pages of Google.

2021 March 17. Google mails me "Google systems confirm that on Mar 15, 2021 we started collecting Google
Search impressions for your website in Search Console. This means that
pages from your website are now appearing in Google search results for
some queries."

2021 January 26. I got a redirect error from this blog for "Mobile SEO factors that matters". It's to soon to get results and indeed. The site is not found.

2021 January 13. "Mobile SEO factors that matters" is not in Google's index, so I requested indexing. The url is now in the priority crawl queue.

ZOMDirhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08715432864169066494noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2754915272861373823.post-91396103918073898922021-01-11T00:17:00.002-08:002021-01-11T00:17:29.300-08:00BLaaG for Blogger
Recently I finally had time to update and maintain ZOMDir.com and all related subdomains.

That included find and correct broken and redirected links at this blog.

However I learned that it is hard to find the broken links at a Blogger blog. There are to much false positives. Hence I decided to create a variant of the broken link checker Broken Links at a Glance optimalized for blogger blogs.

The result is BLaaG for Blogger.

Please let me know what you think of this broken link checker.

Thanks, and best regards,
Hans

ZOMDirhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08715432864169066494noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2754915272861373823.post-53608669075254754242018-07-30T07:52:00.001-07:002021-01-05T11:33:22.665-08:00Linking out isn't about risk. It's about uncertainty.<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">Recently I wrote that you should check redirected links.
<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">In The Ambler Warning from Robert Ludlum it is explained exactly why this is important.
<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">From the previous blog, you might get the idea that it is an acceptable risk that one percent of the removed links, link out to hacked sites.
<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">However Caston -my favorite character in The Ambler Warning- explains the difference between risk and uncertainty. Let me quote Caston.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">'This isn't about risk. That's what people like you never understand. It's about uncertainty. You think you can assign a probability metric to future events like this. For technical reasons we do that all the time. But it's bullshit - nothing more than a convention, an accounting conceit. Risk suggests measurable probability. Uncertainty is when likelihood of future events is simple incalculable. Uncertainty is when you don't even know what you don't know. Uncertainty is humility in the presence of ignorance.'

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">
<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">Because I don't know how sites get hacked, how it will be done in the future -Will the hackers use artificial intelligence?-, -Are hacking instructions for sale?- I realise that the percentage of 1% in the previous link is indeed bullshit.
<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">However the advice to check redirected links is still valid, although it was based on risk. I think the advice should be based on uncertainty.
<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">Again, good luck with checking and repairing your broken and redirected links.
<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">Everyone will understand that broken external links will lower the user experience.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">Not everyone will know that the percentage of broken links at your website is an indication for search engines how often you check for broken links.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">A lot of broken links? Poor maintenance!

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">The halftime of an external link is two year. Hence the number of broken links indicates what was the last time you checked and repaired broken links.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">Repairing broken links at a regular base is the difference between a neglected site and a smooth website.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">Redirected links are dangerous

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">Almost everyone thinks that redirected links won't do any serious harm. Believe me that is a huge mistake. Redirected links are dangerous.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">Recently I analyzed the reason why links are automatically removed from ZOMDir.com (you will find the numbers below).
<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">One of the main findings is that o<span face=""helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif">ne percent of the removed links, link out to hacked sites.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif"><span face=""helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif"><span face=""helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif">How to find links to hacked sites?

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif"><span face=""helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif">Almost the only way to discover links to hacked sites, is by following the redirected link. When you see an online shoe store where you expected information of a fitness center, you know the site is hacked.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">Of course there are a lot of redirected links. A lot of websites switch from http to https these days. Make live easier for yourself and link to the redirected site instead of the original site. Otherwise you have to check every redirected site again and again when you check and repair broken links.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">Other findings

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">1. Half of the broken and redirected links could be fixed. That is the target website is still working fine, although the website has been rebuild. Depending on the quality of the rebuilding team you are redirected, get a neat 404 error or a brute server error;<span face=""helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif"><span face=""helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif">2. Ten percent of the broken links are due to programming errors. This vary from very slow loading webpages, to pages without any content, to incorrect database connections. So always check your entire site with a broken link checker when someone has changed something at your site;

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif"><span face=""helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif">3. Another ten percent of broken links are due to the classic 404 page not found error. Most of the time these error indicates that the website was rebuild, and the rebuilding team didn't redirect the old webpage;

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">4. When a site owner gives up a domain name, around 25% of these old domains are parked by a domain broker;

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">5. 30% of the removed links are removed due to redirections. Nearly all redirected webpages redirect to a secure site.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The lower the percentage broken links you allow, the more frequent you should check and repair broken links.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">With the tool Maintenance Frequency at a Glance you are able to find out how often you should check for broken links.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">This tool is based on research regarding the half time of broken links in a copy of the former Yahoo! directory.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Some findings are:
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

When 3% broken links is acceptable, you should check your site every 1 month.

When you check your site every 3 months, you might expect 8% broken links.

When you check your site every 6 months, you might expect 16% broken links.

When you check your site every year, you might expect 29% broken links.

When you check your site every 2 year, you might expect 50% broken links.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I think that you should check for broken links at least every 3 months although I often advice to check your site every month for broken links.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">For relative small sites I advice Broken Links at a Glance. For larger sites I advice Xenu's Link Sleuth.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Happy broken link hunting,

Better said, the half-life of an external link is two year.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">That is, when you create today a website with 100 working external links and checks your website after two year with a broken link checker, you will discover that rougly 50 links are broken.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">How do you know?

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I can almost hear you thinking "How do you know?". Well I will explain below.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">In the past I have copied as much data as possible of the directory Yahoo! This is because Yahoo! stopped, I have created a directory myself and I wanted to analyse the links and structure of this famous directory.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">At January 4, 2016 I analysed the data I have and concluded that 77% (or more exactly 76.8387682%) of the links are fine.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Recently (October, 9 2017) I analysed the data again. Now 42% (42.0219319%) of the links are fine.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Based on this data I concluded that on an average day 0,093670021% of external links will get broken. That does not seem much. However the linkrot percentage per month is 2.81%.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Consequences

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">After a half year one sixth of the links are broken.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">After a year 30% of the links are broken.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">After two years 50% of the links are broken. Hence the half-life of a link is two year.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">See also this graph below
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">So when you think 3% broken links is acceptable, then you should check for broken links every month.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">When 5% is acceptable, check every two months and when you think 10% is acceptable, check every 4 months for broken links.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Tip: Use the tool <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Maintenance Frequency at a Glance to find your optimal maintenance frequency.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Be wise, and check and repair your links at a regular base,
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Hans
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Update: After writing this blogpost I discovered that in the document "A longitudinal study of Web pages continued: a consideration of document persistence" it is stated that the half-time of a random web page is about 2.0 years. Great that's exactly what I concluded.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">When I detect a redirected or broken link with Broken Links at a Glance I follow in general the following steps:

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large; font-weight: normal;">

Follow the link to analyse it

Try another URL of the same site

Try to contact the website owner

Search for an alternative webpage

Remove the link

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">1. Follow the link to analyse it

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Always follow the link to see what happens.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">When you got a 404 Page not found you might go to the next step.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">When you link to a website that doesn't exist anymore you might get the error "Server not found".

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">If that's the case and the HTTP error code wasn't 503 assume this link is broken and go to step 4 or depending on the situation to step 5.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">2. Try another URL of the same site

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">When you thought you linked to the homepage of a website and you got a 404 error then it is often easy to navigate to the new homepage of that website.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Update your webpage by replacing the old link with the new address of the homepage.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">When you linked to a specific page, it could be that that information is still available at another location.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">So you have to search at that site for the same information.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">When found, you should update your webpage by replacing the old link with the new address.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">When not found, take the next step.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">3. Try to contact the website owner

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">As you probably have experienced, websites aren't as static as you want. However that doesn't always mean that the information is gone.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Due to a website reorganisation the information you want to link to might be at another address.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">When you are not able to find it yourself, you might contact the website owner. Almost every website has a contact information page.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">If you can't find an e-mail address you might try the e-mail address info@websitename.com.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Make clear that you linked to a webpage with information regarding ... and ask what the new address is for this information because the webpage you linked to has vanished.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">4. Search for an alternative webpage

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Linking out is good practice, so I prefer and advise you to keep linking.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">When all previous steps failed search for another webpage with the information you want to link.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Simple use your favorite search engine and hunt for the information you want to link to.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Often you will find an alternative.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">When found, update your webpage by replacing the old link with the new address of the alternative webpage found.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Otherwise, you should remove the link as described in the next step.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">5. Remove the link

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Too bad, the webpage you linked to doesn't exist anymore, and you can't find an alternative webpage to link to.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">When that's the case you should update the webpage where you linked from and remove the link completely.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Mind that this might have the consequence that you should rewrite your text.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">That said, the process of fixing broken links is relative straightforward.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">For the best results, check your links at a regular base. For example every month.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Finally I like to tell you something about redirected links and broken links.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Why check redirected links?

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Redirected links are often indicated by the HTTP status code 301.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">In general a HTTP status code which has the format<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> 3XX<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">indicates a redirected link.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Often people think -incorrectly- that a redirected link isn't a problem. Okay, sometimes it isn't a problem, but sometimes it is.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">To find out you have to click these links to see where they redirect to.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">From http to https

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">When the redirect is logical, for example from http:// to https:// it is advised to update your webpage with the redirected link by removing the old location (http://...) with the new location (https://...).
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">By doing this, the next time you check your website for broken links, you have to check fewer redirected links.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Another system

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">It might happen that the website you link is using now another content management system with the side effect that old pages are redirected. When the redirect is logical update your webpage and replace the old location with the new location. However when the redirect isn't logical, then consider this as a broken link.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">For sale or sold

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">It might happen that the website you link to is gone and a domain name speculant redirects your page to a "domain for sale landing page". You should consider this as a broken link.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">It might happen that the website you link to is now owned by someone else who works in a complete different business. In that case you should consider this as a broken link.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Hyjacked

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">It also might happen that the website you link to is hyjacked and is now selling shoes instead of ... whatever you where linking to. Also in this case you should consider this as a broken link. You might consider to warn the original website owner by sending a mail to info@websitename.com. Inform what you have discovered and ask polite to inform you when the website is restored so you are able to restore your link.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">What are broken links?

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Broken links are often indicated by the HTTP status code 404.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">However other status codes also might indicate a broken link. When the status code starts has the format 4XX or 5XX the link is probably broken.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I have experienced that websites which respond with a 408 or a 500 HTTP status code still might work although the may be a little slow.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">When that's the case you have to decide for yourself if you consider this as a broken link or not.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">When you link to a small website which probably doesn't get much visitors it might occur that the first time someone visits that website (the broken link checker) the response is slow while at a second visit (you checking the links marked as broken) the response is reasonable.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">A website which responds with a 503 HTTP status code is in maintenance mode. You might ignore this broken link for the moment, however you might assume that in a few days that website will work.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Hope this helps,
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Hans
The reason?

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">Google was the first search engine who used the number of links to a webpage as an indicator of the relevance of that page.
<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">Links are still relevant

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">Update: March 24, it became in the news that content and links are the number one and two ranking factors (or vice versa). See: Google's top 3 ranking factors.
<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">Nowadays linking is still an important indicator. A study of Backlinko makes clear that ...

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">Backlinks remain an extremely important Google ranking factor. We found the number of domains linking to a page correlated with rankings more than any other factor.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">
Another indication that the original Pagerank algorithm is still a huge factor comes from this accidental SEO test from Moz. The concluded that ...

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">What our data suggests is that, on average, there’s a 15% traffic loss following a 301 redirect; but any individual redirect could be much better, or much worse.
<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">
<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">What’s particularly fascinating about this number, 15%, is that it is exactly the amount of PageRank loss Google described in the original PageRank paper.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">How to get links the wrong way?

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">Since it is clear that a lot of links helps your website to become higher in the search results people created "fly-by-night" directories and "Private Blog Networks" to create links by them self.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">It is clear that Google don't like these tactics because they corrupt the search results. So Google declared the war on link schemes.
<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">Content marketing

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">Therefor a lot of people believe that content marketing is the answer. Write helpful attractive content which help users and people will come, link to you and you will earn a high position in the search results.

That doesn't mean that a link from a directory is useless. If the directory has a page with links that belongs to the same category (which could be considered as <span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">helpful attractive content<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">) and your link belongs also to this category then it is a perfect fit.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">Create helpful links

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">If your link is the only link in a category then it is either a very detailed category either it is suspicious.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">A single link on a page could be treated by Google as a link scheme which can negatively impact a site's ranking in search results.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">The latest is also the case when your link belongs to another category.

So when you add a link to a directory make sure that it is the correct category and that there are other relevant links in that category.

Good luck with linkbuilding,
Hans

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">By the way, almost as important as links to your site are the links from your site. A study from Reboot Online Marketing learned that outgoing links have positive effects. So feel free to link to me ;-)

--
ZOMDir.com is a dynamic directory and a wiki
Everyone is able to add a link in 10 seconds
To learn more view this Slideshare presentation

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">Linkbuilding is hard, however building a link directory is harder. The two main reasons are:

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

Collecting relevant links related to a subject (location) couldn't be done in a split second;

There is a negative sentiment regarding link directories.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;"><span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">Collecting relevant links is hard

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">Collecting relevant links is like content curation. You're not only hunting for relevant links for the subject your are working on, you also have to add these links to the corresponding page of the link directory.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">
Imagine that you want to create a page about broken link checkers. Often you will start with Google. When I search for broken link checker in Google.com I got the following results in 0.33 seconds:

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOQLw7ca7VUegakVzGed3z_CQdldTb2SEYrky-4enXsX9QTZNBTlVPouBt7Me6Xr825xJP8CflueyPd9R47Fx9nsN3GX4Bz7N3dm_52MtDj0hj4iDZd6gwi4nb3P20mzDWTxxOjUjhXUEm/s1600/serp+broken+link+checker.png" style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: medium; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;">

The top 10 links I found* are:

https://linktiger.com/

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">
There is more than the first page

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">
There are more pages about broken link checkers. For example I missed the still famous broken link checker Xenu's Link Sleuth.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">I also missed ZOMDir's Broken Links at a Glance in the top 10, but hey, that's a relative new link checker. What to expect else :-)

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">However Google indicates that there are more than 1 billion pages found. That is a little bit to much to add to a link directory.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">So you have to curate which broken link checker, or better said which webpages related to broken link checker, should be listed. That makes a huge difference.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">There are a lot of articles with titles like

5 essential link checking tools for SEOs, bloggers and ...<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: medium;">,

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">and so on. Do you want to add these articles? Remember taking a decision takes time...
<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">In depth analysis

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">Content curation is nothing without an in depth analysis. So you have to take a look at every site you want to add and decide what to do with it. During this process you have to answer questions like:

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">Do you want to add broken link checkers which checks only one page?

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">Do you want to add online broken link checkers which need a captcha?

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">Do you add all broken link checkers you find or do you select only the best working link checkers?

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">Based on your decisions you will have a list of relevant websites related related to broken link checkers.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">Almost there

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">The latest step in the process is adding the link to the directory. This should be as easy as possible for the curator. I don't know how other directories work, but at an average I'm able to add a link per minute.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">So creating a list of 15 links takes me roughly a quarter of an hour.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">Believe me, creating a relevant list of broken link checkers takes hours instead of seconds.
<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">Negative sentiment regarding link directories

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;"><span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">The second reason why creating a link directory is hard is the negative sentiment regarding link directories.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;"><span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">
For years there had been a negative sentiment regarding link directories. Deservedly because there are a lot of low quality link directories.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">Lots of people bought a PHP script and create a link directory for ABC link exchanges to get high position in the search engines. Even worse, they link unrelated, so links regarding completely different subjects where at one page. This makes the pages completely useless for normal users.

No wonder that Google stated in 2012 that they will reward high-quality sites with a algorithm now known as Pinguin.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">As a result a lot of marketeers and search optimalisation specialists started to think that almost all link directories are a no go area.
<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">I think the tide turns at this moment. A study of Backlinko makes clear that ...

Recently I discovered that this website doesn't work any more. Luckily Ryan Witt, who has conceived and written whichloadsfaster, has stored the original code at GitHub. Besides that Ryan has stated at the about page that:

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">whichloadsfaster is open source, written in HTML and JavaScript and runs entirely on the client-side. You can host the files on your own site and tweak them to suit your own nefarious plans. We promise not to tell.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">Although it is not the core business of ZOMDir.com, I created my own version of whichloadsfaster.
<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">whichloadsfaster.zomdir.com is slightly different from the GitHub version.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">The order of the menu items is more logical;

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">There is now a copyright statement according to the license<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">;

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">Some texts are changed (mainly on the splash screen);

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">The stats (Google Analytics<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif"> and Clicky<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">) are removed;

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">The default behavior is now serial instead of parallel;

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">There is a favicon now.

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">The most important change however is the accuracy, now the duration is rounded at 100ms due to the fact that there was a huge deviation when you repeat tests for really fast webpages like example.zomdir.com and example.com.
<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">Hope that this tool give you a clue about the performance of your website.
